New podcasts, ROs in the news, Save the dates for 2026 meetings

New episode available on RTAnswers On Target Podcast Show
To coincide with National Cancer Research Month, the ASTRO Communications committee has released a new podcast on the RTAnswers On Target podcast show. This podcast, featuring Malcolm Mattes, MD, from Rutgers Cancer Institute, and James Yu, MD, from Dartmouth Cancer Center, provides an overview of how radiation therapy is currently used to treat cancer and how research in cancer biology, physics and artificial intelligence is improving cancer care with radiation therapy. Additionally, they discuss how patients can improve care through participation in clinical trials. The podcast is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, as well as at www.astro.org/OnTargetPodcast and www.rtanswers.org/OnTargetPodcast.
 
ROs in the news
Following President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis, several recent news stories featured the perspective of radiation oncologists discussing screening and treatment for the disease. Howard Sandler, MD, MS, FASTRO, commented on radiation and hormone therapy options in the Los Angeles Times. Curtiland Deville Jr., MD, FASTRO, appeared on leading news shows including ABC World News Tonight and multiple programs on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and NPR, with comments excerpted in USA Today. Jason Efstathiou, MD, PhD, FASTRO, was quoted in the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and New York Times and spoke with ABC News regarding survival outcomes.
 
Looking ahead to 2026 – Save the dates
Two exciting multidisciplinary meetings will be held next year. First, mark off February 17-18, 2026, for the new Multidisciplinary Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Symposium (MRPTS) in Palm Desert, California. Immediately following the MRPTS, and located at the same beautiful location, the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancers Symposium will be held February 19-21, 2026, focusing on the theme: Advancing Patient-Centered Care through Innovative Team Science. The Call for Abstracts will open July 25, with notifications in late November. Registration for both meetings will open late summer 2025.
 
Attention residents: Brachy workshop slated for Annual Meeting
ARRO is excited to announce that the ARRO Day program at the ASTRO Annual Meeting has been expanded to include a brachytherapy workshop, Principles and Skills of Brachytherapy: A Resident-focused Workshop, on Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. This workshop will include both didactic lectures and hands-on training. Regular ARRO Day programming will immediately follow the workshop. Please help us plan for ARRO Day events by completing this Participation Form.
 
House passes mega bill that boosts doc pay, cuts Medicaid
In a 215-214 party-line vote on May 22, House Republicans passed a mammoth budget bill that includes $9 billion in Medicare physician payments and $700 billion worth of Medicaid cuts. Senators are expected to make significant revisions to the bill, especially around Medicaid. See more at What’s Happening in Washington.
