DEA issues letter outlining training requirement under MATE Act
March 30, 2023
On March 27, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) released a letter outlining the training requirements for the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 created a new one-time, eight hour training requirement under the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act for all DEA-registered practitioners.
Why it matters: Beginning on June 27, 2023, practitioners will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form affirming they have completed the new training requirement. This applies to those who are completing their initial registration application and those who are renewing.
The deadline to satisfy the new training requirement is the date of the practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission that occurs on or after June 27. It is a one-time requirement and will not be a part of future registration renewals.
How to satisfy the new training requirement
- These groups of practitioners are deemed already to have satisfied the training:
- Group 1: practitioners board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry
- Group 2: practitioners who graduated within five years of June 27, 2023, and successfully completed a comprehensive curriculum including at least eight hours of training on:
- Treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or
- Safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid and other substance use disorders.
- Alternatively, practitioners can complete eight hours of training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders from various accredited groups.
