Pipeline Protégé Program

ASTRO’s Committee on Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (CHEDI) has a mission to advance the status of minorities and the underserved in oncology through educational and professional opportunities, advocacy, and awareness. The Pipeline Protégé Program was created as a career development program aimed at bringing diversity to ASTRO’s Councils and diversifying ASTRO’s future leaders.
The Pipeline Protégé Program has a year-long term that begins and ends at the ASTRO Annual Meeting. During the first year in a pilot phase, the project for the protégés will be focused on further developing the Pipeline Protégé Program. After the one-year pilot phase, the program will be expanded so that one protégé will be chosen for each ASTRO Council (Clinical Affairs and Quality, Education, Government Relations, Health Policy and Science) pending the availability and interest of applicants. Each Council will determine a project with which the protégé will be actively involved in and for which he or she may write an abstract or manuscript (the project will be designed by the Board). Each Council will determine with whom the protégé will work (the Chair, the Vice-chair or both) and also any Committee Chair who may be leading a project within a council. At the end of the program term, the protégé will attend the ASTRO Board of Directors meeting on-site at the Annual Meeting and will be expected to report out on his/her experience in the program, including the status of the project.
The program is designed to provide underrepresented minorities within ASTRO exposure to leadership activities with a goal of developing the next generation of ASTRO leaders. Ideally, those who are selected as protégés will remain highly active and engaged in the ongoing activities of their assigned Council. Protégés will have access to seasoned volunteer and staff leaders and participate in planning conversations that help shape ASTRO’s programs and activities.
- Must be a Board-certified radiation oncologist or medical physicist.
- Must have at least five years of practice experience.
- Must be an ASTRO member.
- Must have a demonstrated interest in diversity, inclusion, health equity and/or disparities.
- Must have strong interpersonal and presentation skills along with the ability to work collaboratively.
- Must have the ability and support to commit significant time to attend meetings and conference calls.
2018-19 Pilot Term Year
- Work towards advancing an ongoing or new project that exists within his/her assigned Council.
- Observe Council and Committee leadership and staff plan activities.
- Develop a high-level understanding of how ASTRO operates at both the Council and Board level.
- Develop valuable connections with Committee and Council leadership.
- Attend the September 2019 ASTRO Board meeting and report out on his/her Pipeline Protégé Program experience and project status.
- Attend the September 2019 ASTRO CHEDI meeting and report out on his/her Pipeline Protégé Program experience and project status.
- Upon completion of the Pipeline Protégé Program, protégés will be asked to complete an evaluation of the program.
ASTRO will provide:
- Complimentary registration for the 2019 Annual Meeting at which the protégé will report out on his/her experience.
- Economy airfare to and from the 2019 Annual Meeting.
- Two nights of lodging/hotel stay for the 2019 Annual Meeting.
