ASTRO Government Relations Resident Fellow selected
We are excited to announce that Mustafa Basree, DO, MS, a resident at the University of Wisconsin, was selected as ASTRO’s 2025 Government Relations Resident Fellow. Dr. Basree will shadow ASTRO’s Advocacy staff, participating in all advocacy meetings and functions, including meetings with members of Congress or their staff. Dr. Basree, who was among eight applicants, is a member of ASTRO’s Education Committee, the ARRO Executive Committee and the ARRO Education Subcommittee. Dr. Basree has participated in ASTRO’s Advocacy Day for the last two years and will attend again in 2025. Applications for 2026 will open in the summer of 2025.
Oral Boards study groups
Have you been wanting to study for oral boards in a group setting or practice talking through oral boards cases? The ARRO Education Committee is coordinating another effort to form study groups similar to last year (which was received very positively). Those groups will be comprised of residents from different institutions who are interested in oral boards studying. If interested, fill out this form. We will also be forming study groups among new faculty who are studying for the upcoming exam in May, so please share with your graduated co-residents! We will solicit entries until the end of the year, with emails going out to formed groups in January 2025. For questions, email Mustafa Basree or Shane Neibart.
Are you interested in Brachytherapy?
The American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) has started a resident council, co-chaired by Bethel Adefres, MD, and Parisa Shamsesfandabadi, MD, to create a space for residents to interact and connect with brachytherapy faculty and fellow residents. Make sure you check out the ABS website, reach out to council co-chairs, or email our ARRO-ABS liaison Rehema Thomas, MD, to get involved, network and share ideas. ABS membership is FREE for residents.
ABS is also interested in launching a newsletter that includes challenging brachytherapy teaching cases. This will be similar to the Red Journal’s Grey Zone cases – we hope to gather faculty/resident perspectives on these cases to facilitate our learning. If you’re interested in contributing, please email ARRO-ABS liaison Rehema Thomas, MD and/or Chirag Shah, MD, ABS faculty. Our team would be happy to work with you to write the case and solicit input from other faculty. This is a fun opportunity and one that allows residents to connect with faculty both at their home and also outside institutions.
