White House proposes sweeping changes to federal grantmaking
June 3, 2026
This week, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published a proposed rule that would upend how the federal government has awarded grants for the past several decades. The proposed rule specifically calls for review by political appointees and would allow grant cancellations to occur for any reason. It also bans the use of funds for items such as publishing and conference attendance and research into topics like diversity, equity and inclusion. Furthermore, the proposed rule would create certain exemptions for public posting of grant opportunities. The public comment deadline is July 13.
