White House proposes steep cuts to health agencies
April 15, 2026
The White House sent its FY27 budget request to Congress on April 3. It proposes a 12% cut to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), flat funding for the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and flat funding for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). The White House budget request represents the first step in the federal government's annual appropriations process and typically goes through significant revisions as Congress works to pass its funding bills before FY27 begins on October 1. The White House proposed even more drastic cuts in its FY26 request but Congress ultimately passed legislation that increased funding for both NIH and NCI and kept ARPA-H funding flat. The budget mentions that ARPA-H will continue focus on revolutionary radiotherapy effective against all cancers, which relates to the One Comprehensive Universal Radiotherapy for Everyone (1-CURE) program.
