Three-day partial shutdown ends, critical cancer research funding ensured
February 4, 2026
On February 3, the House passed and the President signed into law a five-bill minibus package including ASTRO-supported funding increases for NIH and NCI, as well as an extension of telehealth flexibilities through 2027. The bill provides $47.2 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a $415 million increase over the previous year; it also provides $7.374 billion for the National Cancer Institute (NCI), representing more than $180 million more than prior funding. The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) will remain level-funded at $1.5 billion.
House passage ended a brief government shutdown following Senate changes related to the Department of Homeland Security funding measure.
