ASTRO submits comments on NRC’s proposed modernization of its radiation protection framework

September 2, 2026

On August 31, 2026, ASTRO submitted comments on the NRC’s proposed modernization of its radiation protection framework, emphasizing that reforms should improve clarity and reduce unnecessary burden without weakening safety oversight or patient access. ASTRO supports a graded dose-management framework, flexible modern dosimetry methods, and limited planned occupational dose-limit extensions. The letter urges the NRC to maintain strong ALARA-based programs, Radiation Safety Committee oversight, quantitative occupational dose records, and consistency across Agreement States. ASTRO also supports clearer patient release and caregiver pathways under 10 CFR 35.75, including consent, multi-cycle therapy, and caregiver eligibility guidance. Overall, ASTRO recommends modernization that preserves patient safety, worker protection, clinical judgment, and practical flexibility in medical-use settings.
