ASTRO sends letter to 5 MACs regarding SRT for NMSC
February 27, 2026
ASTRO has sent a letter to five Medicare Administrative Contractors (NGS, WPS, Noridian, CGS and Palmetto) raising concerns about a draft Local Coverage Article (LCA) regarding Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) for the treatment of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers (NMSC), which takes effect March 1. ASTRO’s primary concern is a paragraph in the draft that would exclude hospitals from administering SRT for NMSC. This restriction could limit access to care for Medicare beneficiaries. ASTRO is urging the revision of the draft, noting there is no data to support this limitation. Several of the MACs have already acknowledged ASTRO’s concerns and are presenting them to the workgroup for a change to the LCA.
