ASTRO sends letter to House Energy and Commerce Committee opposing extravasation legislation
July 9, 2025
Together with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, (SNMMI), ASTRO sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee opposing the Nuclear Medicine Clarification Act. If enacted, the bill would require reporting of extravasations above 50 rem. In addition, an article was published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine that concluded that extravasation during therapy was rare and resulted in minimal dosimetric consequences, with absorbed dose at the infusion site well below the thresholds for deterministic effects and soft-tissue necrosis. The NRC is currently evaluating a harm-based definition of extravasation, which should be released by the end of the year.
