Senate and House Diverge on Proposed 2024 Funding for NIH, NCI, ARPA-H
August 1, 2023
As part of the 2024 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations process, the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved its bill which includes:
- $943 million increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- $276 million increase for the National Cancer Institute (NCI)
- $1.5 billion for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H)
Meanwhile, the full House Appropriations Committee is yet to markup and approve their version of the bill which includes:
- $2.8 billion cut to the NIH
- $216 million cut to the NCI
- $1 billion cut to ARPA-H
With both chambers out for August recess, significant work remains to be done to reach a compromise on these numbers upon their return. ASTRO will continue to advocate for critical funding increases for their programs and provide updates as the situation develops in September.
