ARRO's October News: Sign up for subcommittees, upcoming webinars & funding opportunities

October 8, 2026

Thank you all for joining us at ARRO Day and ASTRO 2026! It was another well attended event despite the weather. All attendees received an email from ASTRO's Qualtrics account with a personal link to submit feedback for ARRO Day. Your feedback helps us plan for future events and is greatly appreciated.

Register for ARRO subcommittees
Consider joining one of the ARRO subcommittees: Education, Healthcare Access and Advancement, Global Health, and Communications and Advocacy! Fill out this interest form with your top committee selections. Below are some current projects from each subcommittee. We'd love your input and ideas, join us!

Healthcare Access and Advancement Subcommittee

  1. Improving access webinars: A great opportunity to network and work with faculty across the nation (or globe) to organize webinars about financial toxicity or a topic that you feel passionate about.
  2. Communities Crushing Cancer: The earlier you catch cancer, the more treatable it is! We need residents to be the radiation oncology liaisons for CCC, an organization focused on improving screening rates.
  3. Intern year liaison: Connect with fourth-year medical students and interns and provide resources to ease their transition into residency.
  4. Medical Student Pipeline: Mentor and create a community for undergraduate students interested in radiation oncology, physics or radiation therapy.

Communications and Advocacy Subcommittee Projects

  1. Resident resource website: Update our current ARRO resources website with high impact resources.
  2. Communications/Advocacy webinar in anticipation of the next ASTRO Advocacy in 2027.
  3. Tip Tuesday: Create social media content for high yield tips for RadOnc residents.

Global Health Subcommittee Projects

  1. Global Oncology Webinar Series: Help organize interactive sessions with radiation oncologists and global oncology leaders from around the world.
  2. ARRO/ASTRO Global Health Scholars Program: Support residents participating in global oncology rotations and projects, connect with mentors, and help showcase their experiences and work across the ARRO community.
  3. International Collaborations: Work directly with radiation oncology groups in other countries to identify educational needs and develop joint webinars, case-based teaching, surveys, and research projects.
  4. Global Health Mentorship and Career Development: Connect residents with faculty mentors who can provide guidance on global oncology careers, research, grant writing, project development, and building sustainable international partnerships.

ABR exam updates
The ABR continues to shift exams away from rote memorization and toward application, clinical judgment and safety, and recently shared these updates with ARRO at ASTRO 2026:
  • Written exams will include more image-based questions, theranostics/nuclear medicine, and nonmalignant disease.
  • Starting in 2028, Physics/Radiobiology exams will provide a reference PDF with selected formulas/constants to emphasize application over memorization. The PDF will be made available on the MyABR website as a downloadable document in 2027, to aid in preparation for the 2028 written exams. It will remain accessible for reference to examinees during the exam session.
  • Clinical trial questions will remain focused on practice-changing implications, not memorizing trial statistics.
  • Clinical trials will not be directly tested on oral boards. Mentioning a trial you know well may help, but not knowing/referencing one will not hurt you.
  • Written exam scoring is standardized across years.
  • Oral board case difficulty determines what level of knowledge is required to obtain a passing case score.
  • Every candidate could pass every exam if they have met the predetermined passing standard.
  • Remember, oral boards assess whether you can practice safely and independently, not perfection.
  • Please remember to read all ABR exam-related material, attend the orientation, and perform your "tech check" from the computer and in the location where you intend to complete the exam. Remove all potential preventable issues ahead of time.
  • The ABR wants you to succeed and provide safe, quality care to your patients.

Takeaway: Focus your studying on understanding and applying clinically relevant information rather than memorizing minutiae. Remember, there will always be some foundational knowledge that is fair game for the exams but remains essential to understanding clinical radiation oncology and becoming a competent board-certified radiation oncologist.

ARRO Oral Board Study Groups
ARRO Education is organizing Oral Boards Study Groups to help residents and graduates connect with peers and prepare together for the Radiation Oncology Oral Board Examination.

If you are interested in participating, please complete this form with your contact information, availability and preferences. We will use your responses to help match residents into small study groups based on scheduling and preparation needs.

Our goal is to make it easier to find study partners, practice cases and prepare collaboratively. Please share this form with other residents and graduates who may be interested!

New ARRO-jDEGRO Collaborative Editorial
We're happy to share that our editorial, "Beyond Malignancy: Addressing the Educational Gap in Radiation Therapy for Nonmalignant Diseases," written on behalf of the ARRO and jDEGRO Executive Committee, was recently published in Practical Radiation Oncology.

The editorial highlights the need for greater attention to nonmalignant disease indications in radiation oncology education. It also represents another step in our ongoing collaboration with jDEGRO to connect trainees across countries and address shared educational needs. Thank you to all the coauthors and colleagues who helped bring this work together!
