Jovan Pierre-Charles Headshot

Jovan Pierre-Charles, MD

  • Institute: University of Kentucky
  • Visiting Country:  Bekoko, Cameroon
Jovan Pierre-Charles, MD, was born and raised in South Florida, and earned his BS in Biology from Morehouse College, where his research in DNA repair first sparked his interest in cancer biology. He went on to earn his MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he cultivated interests in public health, health equity, and global oncology. Inspired by exceptional mentors to pursue radiation oncology, Dr. Pierre-Charles is currently a PGY-4 resident at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. A highlight of his training has been serving as Chief Resident this past academic year.

The privilege of caring for patients throughout Appalachia has deepened Dr. Pierre-Charles' appreciation for delivering compassionate, patient-centered cancer care and reinforced his commitment to improving outcomes for patients both within his community and around the world. His research interests have evolved to include immune-relevant dosimetry and clinical outcomes of spatially fractionated radiation therapy(SFRT). These interests have also fueled his passion for advocacy, advancing policies that expand access to high-quality cancer care, and supporting the development of innovative radiotherapy techniques that can improve cancer treatment in lower-middle-income countries through collaborative global oncology initiatives.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Pierre-Charles enjoys reading across a variety of genres, and spending time with family and friends, preferably near the beach or surrounded by nature.

Jazmyne Tabb Headshot

Jazmyne Tabb, MD

  • Institute: University of California San Diego
  • Visiting Country: Ethiopia
Jazmyne Tabb, MD, is a PGY-4 radiation oncology resident at the University of California San Diego with interests in gynecologic oncology, brachytherapy, and global cancer care. Growing up in a rural community as the oldest daughter of a single mother shaped her resilience and gave her an early understanding of how geography and access can influence health outcomes.

Before entering medicine, Dr. Tabb attended the University of South Alabama, where she competed as a Division I track and field athlete. The discipline, perseverance, and team-centered mindset she developed through athletics continue to guide her approach to medicine and service.

Dr. Tabb’s global health work focuses on expanding access to high-quality radiation therapy through sustainable partnerships, local capacity building, and bidirectional learning. As an ARRO Global Health Scholar, she will collaborate with physicians at Jimma University Medical Center in Ethiopia to support the implementation of three-dimensional high-dose-rate brachytherapy and better understand the clinical and educational needs surrounding this transition.

Mentorship is central to Dr. Tabb’s work. She is committed to helping students explore careers in medicine, creating meaningful pathways into the field, and serving as a resource to those navigating medical training. She brings curiosity, warmth and a genuine love of people to everything she does. She is energized by travel, new adventures and experiences that broaden her perspective and deepen her connections with others. Through her career, she hopes to build lasting relationships, expand access to cancer care, and leave every community she serves stronger than she found it.

Soumya Unnikrishnan Headshot

Soumya Unnikrishnan, MD

  • Institute: Emory University
  • Visiting Country: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Soumya Unnikrishnan is a PGY-5 resident in Radiation Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine and a recipient of the ASTRO-ARRO 2026 Global Health Scholars Grant. Her global oncology work centers on strengthening cancer research infrastructure in low-resource settings, most recently through the development of a comprehensive oncology registry at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The registry is designed to benefit the local patient community while engaging local stakeholders as active partners by gaining insight into their treatment practices and outcomes, with the goal of establishing a sustainable foundation for future collaboration between Emory and TASH.

This project grew out of Dr. Unnikrishnan's participation in Emory University's GLOBE (Global Oncology, Leadership, and Education) track as well as her prior healthcare experiences with underserved populations. This work reflects her broader commitment to building durable, locally-led oncology infrastructure and meaningful ongoing partnerships with global institutions.

Alongside her global health commitments, Dr. Unnikrishnan serves as Chief Resident at Emory Radiation Oncology and is interested in clinical outcomes research, primarily in CNS malignancies. She brings a distinctive, multidisciplinary lens to her research and clinical care, shaped in part by prior training and experience as a physical therapist. Dr. Unnikrishnan aims to continue building international clinical and research partnerships throughout her career, with the goal of expanding access to high-quality radiation oncology data in underserved global settings — furthering both the field of global oncology and her own career within it.
