Joachim Yahalom, MD, FASTRO
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Dr. Yahalom is an Attending Radiation Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is also the Chair of the International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group (ILROG). Stephanie Terezakis, MD, FASTRO says that Dr. Yahalom “exemplifies the essence of mentorship” for his 34 mentees. “He is generous with his time, wisdom, and support, always placing the success of his mentees above personal recognition. Every initiative that Dr. Yahalom leads, he puts junior mentees at the forefront… He offers the stage to young, developing mentees so that they have the opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities and then begin to be known as leaders in the field at a young age which allows them to develop a formidable career.”
Bradford Hoppe MD, MPH says that “beyond his direct mentorship, Dr. Yahalom has been instrumental in ensuring that radiation therapy continues to be integral to lymphoma treatment. His establishment of ILROG has fostered a global collaborative network, enhancing treatment approaches and advocating for the essential role of radiation therapy in hematologic malignancies. This initiative has not only facilitated important clinical research but also created a platform for future oncologists to advance their skills in lymphoma radiation therapy, many of whom were his former mentees.” Sarah Milgrom, MD adds “he has mentored numerous leaders in our specialty, all of whom are a testament to his dedication and foresight as an educator.”
Brandon S. Imber, MD, MA shares that “his ability to inspire, challenge, and elevate those around him is unparalleled. More than just imparting knowledge, he has taught me what it truly means to be a mentor – leading by example, advocating for others, and investing deeply and selflessly in their success.” ASTRO is honored to award a 2025 Mentorship Award to Dr. Yahalom.
