Helen Shih, MD, MS, MPH, FASTRO

Massachusetts General Hospital

Dr. Shih is currently a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School and is the Medical Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Proton Therapy Centers. Her nominators and 22 mentees, including Emily Lebow, MD, say that “(Dr. Shih) is the embodiment of the highest level of mentorship in radiation oncology and academic medicine. She has left an indelible impact on the field of radiation oncology through her dedicated and outstanding mentorship of a generation of trainees.” Jona Hattangadi-Gluth, MD adds that “(her) mentorship has left a lasting, positive impact on the field of radiation oncology.”

Kylie H. Kang, MD MSCI notes that “(Dr. Shih) was not just a mentor—she was a bridge and an amplifier, creating a sense of community and an environment where her mentees could make meaningful connections and thrive … Her long-term commitment to mentorship and her impressive track record of shaping future leaders in radiation oncology speak volumes about her impact.” Lia Halasz, MD adds that “(Dr. Shih) is open to a diversity of ideas and promotes a collaborative spirit. This all has led to improved patient care and understanding of our therapies well beyond her own practice and department.”

Luke R.G. Pike, MD, DPhil describes her as “an exceptional individual who embodies the spirit of mentorship, exemplifying a rare blend of expertise, dedication, and inspiring leadership that sets her apart in the field of radiation oncology.” ASTRO is honored to award a 2025 Mentorship Award to Dr. Shih.
