ASTRO Statement on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

ARLINGTON, Va., June 29, 2022

In response to last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) issued the following statement from Laura A. Dawson, MD, FASTRO, Chair of the ASTRO Board of Directors:

“ASTRO’s members and their cancer teams work every day to provide medically appropriate care to people with cancer. The recent ruling in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case will present new challenges to oncologists including how best to counsel and treat pregnant women who have cancer; the complex issues around infertility associated with cancer therapy; and access to screening and care, especially for poor, indigent and minority individuals with limited access to clinics that previously provided pregnancy care. We are committed to working with our members and the cancer community to ensure patients in every state can access evidenced-based cancer care with consideration about fertility preservation as part of their life-saving treatments.”
