Advances in Radiation Oncology - Reviewer Apprenticeship Program

Peer review is the backbone of academic journals, yet most reviewers never receive formal training on the practice. To address this gap, Advances in Radiation Oncology offers the Reviewer Apprentice Program.

After acceptance into the program, participants will be invited to review articles under consideration for publication at Advances and receive feedback from journal editors. Participants will benefit from exposure to high-quality research in clinical, laboratory-based, and physics-based oncologic sciences, as well as gain insight into the workings of a rigorous peer review process.

Participants who complete five high-quality reviews will earn a certificate of recognition, and their residency program directors will be notified. Additional recognition may be provided to exceptional participants in the journal’s yearly acknowledgment of its outstanding reviewers.

Interested participants from any discipline are encouraged to participate in the program. Applications are considered on a rolling basis; please note there may be a wait list for certain specialties in order to foster a more personalized and efficient experience for each trainee. Residents or fellows in radiation oncology, medical physics or radiation biology are especially encouraged to apply. All applications will be considered regardless of applicant age, race, religion, national origin, sex, gender, disability status, sexual orientation, status as a parent, and/or other protected class. Applications will be reviewed by a group of editors including the Education Editor, Terence T. Sio, MD, MS. Goodness of fit with the journal’s scope, as well as capacity of the program, will be considered.

To be considered for this program, please email your application directly to the Advances in Radiation Oncology Office. Applications should include a CV and cover letter with the applicant’s name, degree, post-graduate status year, clinical and research areas of interest and what they hope to learn from the program. In the body of the email, applicants should also include their top three areas of interest from the list below:
