Presidential Symposium

This year's Presidential Symposium, led by ASTRO President Neha Vapiwala, MD, FASTRO, consists of four sessions that will highlight varying facets of the meeting theme Data to Dialogue: Communicating Radiotherapy’s Value to Advance Care. These sessions include 1) Challenges and Opportunities in Scientific Knowledge Creation and Dissemination; 2) Organ-Preservation: The Undersung Value of RT; 3) Patients’ Perceptions of Radiation Therapy; 4) Stakeholder Perspectives.

Session I - Challenges and Opportunities in Scientific Knowledge Creation and Dissemination

This session will explore how today’s science and health care information will be disseminated tomorrow, and look at the roles of journals, websites, online platforms and AI-powered content.

Session II - Organ-Preservation: The Undersung Value of RT

This session will examine the critical role of radiation therapy in organ-sparing treatment paradigms, focusing on three to four disease sites, looking at both medical and surgical perspectives.

This session will take place in a talk show format, featuring the voices of a patient advocacy nonprofit leader, media influencer, industry ad board member and a grant committee patient representative. They will answer the questions, what does radiation oncology do well and where could the field improve?

Session IV - Stakeholder Perspectives

This session will delve into multiple stakeholder perspectives including government (NCI/NIH), foundation, cancer center administrator/non radiation oncology colleagues, media, industry, insurance specifically prior authorization, and policy/legislative.
