Public Health Emergency extended for 90 more days

April 18, 2022

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra has announced a 90-day extension of the public health emergency (PHE) that was due to expire on April 16. The PHE is being extended for the ninth time since January 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now will last through at least the end of July. The PHE has allowed hospitals and providers to use waivers for innovation in such areas as telehealth. HHS and the Biden Administration have said they would give 60 days prior notice before ending the PHE. It’s unclear if the PHE will be extended again when it expires this summer. Congress recently extended COVID-19 telehealth waivers for five months beyond the end of the PHE.
