Applications for ASTRO Fellows 2024 are now open!

Class of 2023 Fellows

Complete your Fellows application and submit online or nominate a colleague and encourage them to apply before May 3. For more information on the significance of this award, its eligibility requirements, as well as its service prerequisites, check out the ASTRO blog post written by the Chair of the ASTRO Fellows Selection Committee, Beth Erickson, MD, FASTRO. Email ASTRO with any specific questions.

Do you or your colleagues have research to present at ASTRO 2024?
ASTRO is accepting abstract submissions for ASTRO 2024! Accepted abstracts represent all aspects of oncology, radiation oncology and radiation therapy for non-oncologic conditions. The scientific program will feature cutting-edge research in all major disease sites, as well as special physics and biology oral abstract sessions. This year, radiopharmaceutical therapy subcategories have been added. And first authors submitting abstracts from designated low-income countries may request a submission fee waiver. Radiation oncologists to be featured in next week’s free OncoAlert Colloquium
ASTRO members are invited to participate in next week’s OncoAlert Colloquium, a free virtual multidisciplinary meeting with expert talks on major oncology advances from the past year. The meeting will feature three ASTRO experts: Sophia Kamran, MD, will discuss GU radiotherapy on February 5; Charles Simone, II, MD, FASTRO, will discuss lung radiotherapy on February 6; and Eric Miller, MD, PhD, will discuss GI radiotherapy on February 8. Reminder for public comment: ART Safety White Paper
ASTRO requests feedback on the draft Quality and Safety Considerations for Adaptive Radiation Therapy: An ASTRO Safety White Paper. The focus of this consensus-based document is safety and quality assurance practices relevant to ART workflows. The paper covers ART programmatic components, personnel requirements, adaptive processes and quality management. Please review the document and submit comments via the webform by Sunday, February 11.
 
Key member of Congress visits Templeton, California radonc clinic
On January 26, Coastal Radiation Oncology Group physicians Lauren Tait, MD, and Ben Wilkinson, MD, hosted a tour of their Templeton Radiation Oncology Center for U.S. House Representative Jimmy Panetta (D-CA). Rep. Panetta said he was impressed with the Templeton team after seeing firsthand how they provide cancer care services to his constituents in the rural California community. Drs. Tait and Wilkinson worked with ASTRO staff to organize the tour, which also featured discussion of ASTRO’s Radiation Oncology Case Rate legislative proposal. Palmetto revises “Direct Supervision” interpretation in response to ASTRO concerns
In response to ASTRO’s recent letter urging reconsideration of a restrictive “1-2 minute” direct supervision requirement, Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) Palmetto issued a revised radiation therapy LCA A59350. The revised local coverage article (LCA) no longer includes a “1-2 minute” availability requirement associated with direct supervision for RT services. Resident/Fellows: Apply for Seed Grants
The ASTRO Seed Grants provide up to $25,000 over one year, and are designed to foster the research careers of residents and fellows interested in radiation oncology-related basic, translational and/or clinical research. Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. residency or fellowship at the time of application. See more details in the program announcement.

Additionally, the ASTRO-LUNGevity Residents/Fellows in Radiation Oncology Seed Grant, a joint effort with the LUNGevity Foundation, fosters the career advancement of residents or fellows conducting radiation oncology related research for the benefit of patients with lung cancer. Visit ASTRO’s ProposalCentral portal to apply for the seed grants. All seed grant applications are due February 23, 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.
