Goal 1: ASTRO will provide state-of-the-art education and lifelong professional development in the effective use of radiation as a tool for the treatment of patients with cancer and benign disease.
ASTRO will be the primary source for the educational needs of radiation oncology and will continue to organize the world’s leading radiation oncology scientific meeting.
ASTRO will support continuous certification by increasing the number of available online/live SAMS and encouraging member participation as a critical component of maintaining clinical skills.
ASTRO will continue the support and development of small meetings as appropriate for the needs of the specialty.
ASTRO will continue to provide educational resources for all radiation oncology trainees and interested medical students.
ASTRO will work with radiation oncology societies globally to coordinate educational opportunities.
Goal 2: ASTRO will publish the premier scientific and practice journals in radiation oncology.
ASTRO will continue to publish the leading scientific journal in the field, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology•Biology•Physics (IJROBP/Red Journal).
ASTRO will continue to expand Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO).
Goal 3: ASTRO will advance the science through research and innovation to improve clinical outcomes for each patient.
ASTRO will promote advances in research to raise the profile of the specialty.
ASTRO will support the development of comparative effectiveness research on the value of radiation oncology.
ASTRO will build a substantive, collaborative and public relationship with cooperative clinical trial networks (RTOG/NRG Oncology, Alliance, ECOG/ACRIN, SWOG) and will work closely with federal programs supporting cancer research including the NCI.
ASTRO will continue to provide opportunities for basic, translational and clinical research scientists.
Goal 4: ASTRO will be the premier voice for advocacy and health policy for radiation oncology.
ASTRO will continue to be the premier voice in Congress on critical policy issues concerning the specialty and support ASTRO members in state advocacy.
ASTRO will continue to be the premier organization representing radiation oncology before government agencies, AMA and third party payers.
ASTRO will lead efforts to focus on scope of practice and responsible health care resource utilization to promote patient-centered care.
ASTRO will take a leadership position on exploring payment reform initiatives and innovative payment models for radiation oncology.
ASTRO will continue educational outreach activities to the public, referring physicians and the media.
ASTRO will advance the education of members on the impact of health policy issues on the specialty.
Goal 5: ASTRO will shape the framework for the delivery of safe, high-quality, high-value health care to all patients (cancer, benign disease) by the radiation oncology team.
ASTRO will create a robust set of clinical practice statements/guidelines.
ASTRO will support plans for the design, funding and implementation of a national data registry for radiation oncology.
ASTRO will make recommendations to improve patient safety and to mitigate the potential for error in the radiation therapy planning and delivery process.
ASTRO will expand and improve our Practice Accreditation Program.
ASTRO will develop measures-based programs for the assessment and improvement of patient care and safety.
ASTRO will continually update standards for the training, experience and team composition necessary to perform advanced technology.
ASTRO will continue to develop the IHE-RO program, setting standards for the interchangeable use of common technologies.
