Medicare Proposes 6% Cut to Radiation Oncology Physician Payments for 2021

August 3, 2020

On Monday night, August 3, 2020, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) proposed rule, estimating a 6% cut to radiation oncology physician payments in 2021. Initial reviews of the proposal reveal significant cuts to radiation oncology and other specialties likely due to the budgetary impact of previously announced changes in coding and payment for Evaluation and Management (E/M) services. ASTRO is already working closely with other specialties to blunt these E/M related cuts. CMS also is proposing to maintain contractor pricing for proton therapy services, seeking comments on whether telehealth for radiation therapy treatment management services should continue after the COVID-19 public health emergency and considering other policy changes that impact radiation oncology. ASTRO is reviewing the 1,355-page rule and will provide a detailed summary in the coming days, followed by an official comment letter by the October 5 deadline. Access a fact sheet.
