The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced through its provider burden relief FAQ document that it expects to lift the suspension of Medicare claims audits on Monday, August 3. CMS had originally suspended most Medicare fee-for-service medical reviews in March as a response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. CMS cites the reopening of states and the importance of the medical review activities to the program’s integrity efforts as their reasoning for resuming the audits. CMS recommends that providers selected for review should discuss with their contractor any COVID-19 related hardships that could affect their response timeliness.
