ASTRO urges CMMI to exclude radiation therapy from OCF

December 17, 2019

In an official comment letter last week, ASTRO urged the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to remove radiation therapy from the newly introduced the Oncology Care First (OCF) model. The OCF has been proposed to replace the existing Oncology Care Model (OCM) effective January 1, 2021. Similar to the OCM model, OCF initiates an episode of care at the infusion of chemotherapy and encompasses all Part A and Part B services throughout the six-month episode. ASTRO is concerned that continued bundling of radiation therapy services under OCF exacerbates continued reduced utilization of radiation therapy and creates potential access to care issues for cancer patients who would benefit from radiation therapy.
