Program Content/Format

This is a three-part webinar series on stage III unresectable NSCLC and the full continuum of care. A core group of multidisciplinary faculty (medonc/radonc cochairs) with other specialties included related to the lecture (pulmonologist, thoracic surgeon, physicist, dosimetrist). The first webinar will focus on appropriate diagnosis and referrals. The second webinar will focus on non surgical NSCLC and examine the full continuum of care. The final webinar will review challenging cases to improve patient care and outcomes. Key components of all webinars will emphasize interprofessional communications through the patient care.

Statement of Need

There is a wide gap between the near-universal expert recommendation for multidisciplinary care and the penetration of this model of care delivery into real-world clinical care environments. Most examples of multidisciplinary care programs exist in academic or managed care environments, but more than 70% of lung cancer care in the United States is delivered outside such settings (Little, 2007). Even within environments with multidisciplinary care programs, close examination reveals no consistent model structure or function and little evidence to support the impact (Osarogiagbon, 2016). It becomes imperative to increase awareness and understanding for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Diagnosis should be early and treatment, especially in the cases of stage III NSCLC include a multidisciplinary approach. There is significant clinical equipoise in unresectable Stage III non-small cell lung cancer. The multidisciplinary webinar series aims to provide a strategic decision tree for these cases and the type of conversations we should have with our colleagues when coordinating care.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this live activity, attendees should be able to do the following:

• Identify key players involved in multidisciplinary lung cancer care for unresectable Stage III NSCLC.
• Create a strategy to manage pneumonitis with combination chemoradiation and durvalumab.
• Utilize interdisciplinary care to optimize radiation planning for patients with unresectable Stage III NSCLC.

This educational forum has been designed to narrow the competency gaps of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication, patient-centered care, work in interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, commitment to lifelong learning, cognitive expertise, values/ethics for interprofessional practice, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication and teams and teamwork, 14 of the 19 core competencies embraced by the American Board of Medical Specialties, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Institute of Medicine, the American Board of Radiology and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Target Audience

The meeting is designed to meet the interests of practicing medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, internists and family practitioners.
