MIPS - Virtual Groups

Virtual Groups News

The 2019 Virtual Group Elelction Period is now open. All contracting must be complete by December 31, 2018.

The Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) required CMS to allow for the creation of virtual groups. CMS defines a virtual group as a combination of two or more TINs assigned to:
  • One or more solo practitioners, who are also MIPS eligible clinicians, or
  • To one or more groups consisting of 10 or fewer eligible clinicians (including at least one MIPS eligible clinician), or
  • Both of the options above.
Either way, clinicians must elect to form a virtual group for a full year performance period. Even though the election period for 2018 is closed, physicians and practices can evaluate the option for future performance years.
