Safety Is No Accident

bluebook_280x255.jpg

ASTRO’s Target Safely initiative is focused on providing increased education for the delivery team about quality assurance and safety issues. In reviewing the available guidance on quality assurance and safety, ASTRO leadership realized that an update is needed for the "Blue Book," which was last issued in 1991 as a result of intersociety collaboration. Since then, much has changed in radiation oncology treatments; new technologies have been developed and our ability to diagnose and cure our patients has improved. However, these new technologies only function well when training and supervision at every level are sufficient.

In May 2011, ASTRO hosted an intersociety meeting to focus on revising the guidance provided in the "Blue Book". Through collaborative discussion and multidisciplinary writing groups, "Safety Is No Accident," was developed. The book will focus on four main areas:

  • Safety
  • The Process of Care
  • The Radiation Oncology Team (including suggested staffing requirements)
  • Management and Assurance of Quality
