ASTRO asks HHS to support radiation oncology participation in EHR program
In official comments submitted March 15, 2010, ASTRO urged the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ensure that the new electronic health record (EHR) incentive program allows radiation oncologists ample opportunity to demonstrate meaningful use of EHRs and qualify for Medicare physician incentive payments of up to $44,000. The incentive program was authorized as part of provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 to spur the adoption and use of health information technology. ASTRO’s comments urged HHS to ensure that outpatient physicians are eligible for the incentive program; that meaningful use standards are relevant to radiation oncology; and that the program learns lessons from the Physicians Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), and therefore rewards eligible physicians that are making good faith efforts to fully participate.
