ASTRO Affiliated Organizations

ASTRO provides administrative resources and other support, and maintains close ties, with several specific groups of member radiation oncologists in the academic community including radiation oncology program chairs, program directors, residents and others.  ASTRO also works with its oncology nurse members to provide targeted educational opportunities. Information regarding these groups can be found below.

Society of Chairs of Academic Radiation Oncology Programs (SCAROP)

The stated objectives of the Society are to advance the art and science of radiation oncology by the development and promotion of: 1) research in radiation oncology and related fields, 2) undergraduate and graduate education in radiation oncology, 3) standards for patient care as they pertain to radiation oncology and cancer medicine, and 4) any other such matters that may legitimately come within its sphere. In carrying out these objectives, the Society will provide a forum for the discussion of issues of common interest to the Chairs of academic radiation oncology programs and will foster an interchange of ideas through free and informal discussion.

(Please call Steven M. Smith at ASTRO at 1-800-962-7876 for more information.)

Association of Directors of Radiation Oncology Programs (ADROP)

ADROP was formed to assist in organizing the directors of training programs in radiation oncology in an effort to advance and promote optimal training in radiation oncology. This involves the primary objective of sharing and disseminating information and ideas related to the training of radiation oncologists, and promoting activities which enhance training of radiation oncologists.

(Please visit the ADROP Web site for more information.)

Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology (ARRO)

ARRO serves as the voice of residents in radiation oncology, and is represented by an elected Executive Committee with the responsibility of ensuring that residents' views and concerns are fairly represented to the leadership of our specialty. All ARRO members are also members of ASTRO. In addition to providing a voice for residents ARRO works on numerous other items throughout the academic year including the annual Chief Resident and Resident Surveys, creating an Away Rotation Guide, presenting the Teacher of the Year Award, maintaining a key articles database that is available on the ARRO Web site, and updating residents with monthly electronic newsletters or ARROgrams.

ARRO also holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the ASTRO Meeting. ARRO sponsors an all-day program on Saturday at the ASTRO meeting with sessions that include a Practice Entry seminar, and an Introduction to Research, among others. Other events at the Annual Meeting include the ARRO Annual Luncheon, the Poster Walk and the Meet the Professor Luncheon.
